Seven years ago vulnerabilities in the cell phone network were demonstrated that allowed hackers to secret track any cell phone user in the world (Wikipedia). Seven years later, cell phone networks are still vulnerable to an even more widely set of vulnerabilities, discovered by researchers, that include listening in to entire conversations and even sending text messages masqueraded as any cell phone user in the world.
New details from an InfoSec article maintain that those operating the networks knew about the vulnerabilities for almost a decade but have not done enough to close down the flawed protocol.
Per US Representative Ted Lieu, “You cannot have 300 and some million Americans, and really the global citizenry, be at risk of having their phone conversations intercepted with a known flaw simply because some intelligence agencies might get some data. That is not acceptable.”
