Space enthusiasts will score an additional treat this Memorial Day with an up-close look at our red neighbor as its makes its nearest approach to Earth in 11 years. On Monday, Mars will be about 46.8 million miles away from the Earth, its closest distance since November 2005, according to NASA. The phenomenon is called Mars close approach, and it typically occurs every two years as the two planets’ elliptical orbits near each other on their journeys around the sun.
