The U.S. Navy has bestowed an award on the aviators and crew of the French navy’s flagship and its strike group, which carried out ISIS airstrikes in tandem with the U.S. in the escalating fight. The French flattop launched strikes alongside carrier Harry S. Truman from the Persian Gulf in December, a month after the terror attacks that struck the French capital. De Gaulle departed on previously scheduled deployment in the immediate wake of the November 13 terror attacks in Paris. The images of French jets bombing ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq was an important symbol of fighting back for the shocked nation after the attacks that killed 130 people and wounded hundreds of others. The French carrier was the first non-U.S. carrier to take command of Task Force 50 in the Persian Gulf, which plans and controls strikes in the area.
