In A Free Market, The Price Is Right

Written by Teunis Felter

The crude oil market is showing signs of a rally, and with the upturn in gasoline prices this spring, the iron grip of speculators, Big Energy and the shadowy political elites in cahoots with them all has been loosened. Their schemes to lower energy costs have finally been broken. Soon, Congressional investigations and media exposes of the recent slide in oil prices and the billions of dollars of savings consumers have realized from years of paying less at the pump will be exposed. Calls for price controls to prevent this sort of windfall ever happening again will no doubt issue from outraged politicians vowing to “do something” about low prices. Sound familiar? Of course not. Americans have a love-hate relationship with prices. Gleeful when they drop, upset and outraged when they hit new highs. But in reality, prices are rarely the result of dark conspiracies and secretive machinations of market wizards or Wall Street manipulators.
