Something about being at the Karolyi ranch brings out the best in Gabby Douglas. The reigning Olympic all-around champion is headed in a “very, very good direction” after spending the last week at the ranch, Martha Karolyi said Monday. So much so that she hasn’t missed a routine on balance beam in the last four or five days. Despite struggling at both the national championships and Olympic trials, Douglas edged Ashton Locklear out for the last spot on the five-woman team because she is more versatile. Douglas admitted she wasn’t as focused as she should have been going into the Olympic trials. But with that settled and nothing else to distract her since the women arrived at the ranch Sunday, Douglas has thrived. Just as Karolyi knew she would.
