Third-party candidates like Mr. Johnson haven’t been given much respect or attention in recent years, but this election is a little different. That’s because the two major-party nominees — Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton — are among the least-liked in recent history. As a result, news outlets and disaffected voters alike have been giving generous attention to Mr. Johnson and Jill Stein, the Green Party’s presidential nominee. Last week, CNN hosted its second Libertarian Party presidential ticket town hall with Mr. Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld. The network will also broadcast a Green Party town hall on Aug. 17.Whether that attention will translate into any measure of electoral success is yet to be seen. Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton are scheduled to face off in their first head-to-head presidential debate on Sept. 26. And if Mr. Johnson has his way, he’ll be onstage too.
