Hermine becomes first hurricane to make landfall in Florida in 11 years

Written by Teunis Felter

Hermine made landfall in Florida early Friday morning and will continue to deliver heavy rain, gusty winds, flooding and the risk of tornadoes into Friday night. The storm became a Category 1 hurricane shortly before 3 p.m. EDT Thursday and made landfall around 1:30 a.m. EDT Friday east of St. Marks, Florida, along the Florida Panhandle. While losing its water source over land, Hermine weakened back to a tropical storm at 5 a.m. EDT Friday morning. The last hurricane to make landfall in Florida prior to Hermine was Wilma in 2005.  It has been over 3900 days since a major hurricane last hit the U.S. mainland.
