The New Tommy John Surgery That Could Change Baseball

Written by Teunis Felter

For nearly half a century, a UCL injury has meant complete elbow reconstruction for pitchers—and over a year of rehab. Thanks to an enterprising doctor and some very high-quality tape, that is finally changing. A potential new surgery uses a construct of anchors and a bovine collagen tape that is strong enough to pull a car. Using elbows from cadavers, they put the anchors-tape construct through maneuvers on a machine that tests stress and tension. They completed their experiments in June. The machine tests showed that an anchors-tape construct could be “at least as good” as the full reconstruction of an elbow with grafted tendon.
