…today as I’m driving home from the bus with my boys, I see a very familiar road kill….Oreo our cat. I start to panic… the boys LOVE Oreo ….probably more than they love me.
If I would of been alone I would of stopped and felt for a pulse or maybe even debated C.P.R….but I couldn’t stand the thought of letting the boys see him dead along the road. I was sick to my stomach thinking about the pain and grief that I was going to witness when we broke the news to them.
When we got home I pulled my husband Ryan to the side and told him what I saw. We decided to go alone to check it out. We told the boys that we were going on a quick “drive” and that we would be right back. In the garage Ryan and I began gathering the supplies we needed to collect the body. Ryan grabbed a small box.
( In a hushed tone)
Me:” That box is too small! He won’t fit in that!”
Ryan: “Yes he will!”
Me: “That box wouldn’t hold a guinea pig! Have you seen Oreo lately??? He ate a bird and two mice yesterday!!”
Ryan grabbed a bucket instead (obviously we are going to “fold” Oreo into the bucket?)
I drive to the scene of the death and as I pull up next to the body we both sit in the car debating if it is indeed Oreo. I could only take quick peeks because one eye was popped out of its head and it was making me sick but it was black and white so I was pretty sure.
Me: “That is Oreo”
Ryan: “No, that is NOT Oreo”!
Me: “Yes it is! Oreo has been missing ALL day and it has the same markings and same size! Its Oreo!”
Ryan: “Its not Oreo!”
Me: “Go feel his front foot and see if it has claws”(Oreo is declawed)
Ryan puts on a glove and dodges traffic and picks it up by its tail and takes it to a safe place.
As he is inspecting the body I am sitting in the van planning the funeral.
Ryan gets back in the van.
Ryan: “THAT CAT HAD CLAWS!!!…And its been dead for DAYS! I told you it wasn’t Oreo!!”
Me: “oops”
(now that he mentioned it….that cat did look a bit different than Oreo)
(….Ryan needs some sort of reward for being married to me this long…)
….Oh, and when we got back home, Oreo was waiting on the front step for us 🙂
